tonnta (meaning ‘waves’) is her first single on TULLE and a tribute to her ageing grandmother, brighid. lyrically imbued with the intimacy of familial love, its evolving rhythmic washes are emblematic of the shifting sands one navigates in the face of dementia.

tonnta is out tomorrow. don’t really know what to do with myself. I thought I’d share a clip of my sister kate taking to my nana a few years ago. she’s telling the story of her childhood, growing up in clonliffe gardens on dublin’s northside. often when dementia progresses, the memories that stay clearest are those from early on in life. this recording was made in her greenhouse in beaumont, and I’m so glad I captured it. it’s very her - slagging me til the end x

This is a photograph of a recipe my nana wrote, for buns we used to make together when I was a child. We'd always do pink icing on them but I'd usually mess it up and put too much red food dye in and then have to keep diluting it until there was way too much icing. When my granda passed away, my nana's dementia had progressed quite a bit. I was trying to think of things to do in the week of his death to keep her feeling safe and connected. During his wake, I made the buns and me and her and my sister sat at her kitchen table icing them with pink icing. It was a moment of happiness and sharing at an otherwise very sad time. I'm so glad I got to do that with her.
